While acknowledging the constraints imposed by small market size and relatively high business costs, the Government is supportive of growing Tonga’s manufacturing base. Current production includes furniture, food and beverages (bakery lines, soft drinks, and beer), fabrication using imported materials, manufacturing of construction materials and small boat building. Paint is exported from Tonga to a number of nearby Pacific Island markets.
Because of the employment opportunities that do exist in industry, the Government of Tonga does provide some protection to investors through the imposition of a tariff regime. Exemptions on trade taxes are available for manufacturing and processing for raw materials, machinery and equipment. Export manufacturers are also exempt from trade taxes on their production inputs, and from any taxes on exports.
