INDUSTRY INFORMATION –> Agriculture
Agriculture remains the most important source of livelihood for many Tongan people. It contributes around one quarter of GDP, and together with fish, constitutes almost all of Tonga’s merchandise exports. Given the importance of some specific agricultural activities to local livelihoods, the Government has determined that production and farming of the following should be reserved for Tongan citizens:

- root crops (yams, taro, sweet potato, cassava)
- squash
- paper mulberry
- pandanus
- kava
Businesses distributing agricultural stores (e.g. seeds, fertilisers and chemicals) are subject to the Pesticides Act 2002.
