The Cooperative Societies and Credit Union Division is committed to promote and advance the Cooperatives and Credit Unions Movements in Tonga by fostering self-sustaining cooperatives and credit unions that create employment, generate income and enhance the social welfare of their respective communities. These are guided by the Cooperatives Societies Act, 1973 and Credit Unions Act, 1977. (please refer to the section on Laws & Regulations for further details).

A. SERVICES

The Division draws its focus on the following services:
1. Promotion of Cooperative Society Movement’s Movement.
2. Training of Cooperatives and Credit Unions members.
3. Provide inspection of Accounts.
4. Auditing of Financial Reports.
5. Policy Advice and Law Enforcement.

1. Promotion of Cooperative Societies and Credit Union’s Movement:

The Division is responsible for promoting of the Movement through TV, Radio programs and arranged meeting with interested groups in villages and outer islands.

2. Training of Cooperatives and Credit Union members:

The Training Unit conducts trainings for members on management and accounting skills especially for committee members and board of directors.

3. Provide inspection of accounts:

The main focus of the Inspection Unit is to inspect all the accounts of that respected societies and credit unions and report monthly for the Committee or Board of Directors.

4. Auditing of financial reports:

Audit Unit provides auditing of all Cooperatives and Credit Union’s financial reports after the financial year ending. The Unit is also responsible for conducting an Annual General Meeting (AGM) and provide the audited financial report of that respected cooperatives or credit unions.

5. Policy Advice and Law Enforcement:

The Division advices policies enforce laws and regulations for members of Cooperatives and Credit Unions. It also settles disputes and handles other demands that will generate income for the members.

B. STAFF

The staffs have fully trained to provide best services for the members and to ensure that the Movement will elevate economic status of the members.
